CLSI: Tubes and Additives for Venous and Capillary Blood Specimen Collection; Approved Standard—Sixth Edition. CLSI document GP39-A6 (ISBN 1-56238-740-5). Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087-1898 USA, 2010.

Abstract: CLSI document GP39-A6—Tubes and Additives for Venous and Capillary Blood Specimen Collection; Approved Standard—Sixth Edition is a performance standard for manufacturers of venous and capillary blood collection tubes and additives for serum, plasma, and whole blood testing. This document addresses requirements for the materials, construction, and labeling of venous and capillary blood collection tubes and tube assemblies.

CLSI: Collection of Diagnostic Venous Blood Specimens; Approved Standard—7th edition. CLSI document GP41 (ISBN 1-56238-650-6). Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087-1898 USA, 2017.

Abstract: CLSI document GP41—Collection of Diagnostic Venous Blood Specimens by Venipuncture; Approved Standard—7th Edition provides a descriptive, stepwise procedure for the collection of diagnostic blood specimens by venipuncture. Special considerations for venipuncture in children, line draws, blood culture collection, and venipuncture in isolation situations are included.

CLSI: Collection of Capillary Blood Specimens; Approved Standard—Seventh Edition. CLSI document GP42-A7 (ISBN 1-56238-677-8. Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087-1898 USA, 2020.

Abstract: CLSI document GP42-A7— Collection of Capillary Blood Specimens; Approved Standard—Seventh Edition provides procedures for the collection of capillary blood specimens that contribute to the accuracy of the results and safety of the patient and healthcare professional. Specifications for collection sites, puncture depth, and disposable devices used to collect, process, and transfer capillary blood specimens are also included.

CLSI: Procedures for the Collection of Arterial Blood Specimens; Approved Standard—Fourth Edition. CLSI document H11-A4 (ISBN 1-56238-545-3). Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087-1898 USA, 2004.

Abstract: Collection of a blood specimen, as well as its handling and transport, are key factors in the clinical laboratory analysis and ultimately in delivering quality patient care. CLSI document GP43-A4—Procedures for the Collection of Arterial Blood Specimens serves a dual purpose: to reduce the potential hazard to the patient and to maintain the integrity of the arterial blood specimen. Collecting arterial blood is not only technically difficult but also imposes a degree of risk for the patient. Arterial blood is also one of the specimens most sensitive to preanalytic effects. This standard will be particularly valuable to those involved in blood specimen collection, such as clinical laboratory directors, respiratory therapists, physicians, physicians in training, nurses, medical technologists, exercise physiologists, phlebotomists, and perfusionists.

CLSI: Procedures for the Handling and Processing of Blood Specimens for Common Laboratory tests; Approved Guideline—Fourth Edition. CLSI document GP44-A4 (ISBN 1-56238-724-3). Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087-1898 USA, 2010.

Abstract: CLSI document GP44-A4—Procedures for the Handling and Processing of Blood Specimens for Common Laboratory tests; Approved Guideline—Fourth Edition considers multiple variables that are involved in handling and processing blood specimens. Its application should enable the user to recognize and control accuracy and precision factors that occur between the time of blood collection and the time of test performance.

CLSI: Collection, Transport, and Processing of Blood Specimens for Testing Plasma-Based Coagulation Assays and Molecular Hemostasis Assays; Approved Guideline—Fifth Edition. CLSI document H21-A5 (ISBN 1-56238-657-3). Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087-1898 USA, 2008.

Abstract: CLSI document H21-A5—Collection, Transport, and Processing of Blood Specimens for Testing Plasma-Based Coagulation Assays and Molecular Hemostasis Assays; Approved Guideline—Fifth Edition is an update of the previous edition published in 1998. The guideline provides procedures for the collection, transport, and processing of blood specimens for coagulation testing. Tests of the coagulation system are very sensitive to storage (time and temperature), concentration of anticoagulant, and surface of containers; attention to these parameters is important. H21-A5 is primarily directed toward laboratory and/or clinical personnel responsible for obtaining patient specimens and preparing samples for plasma-based or molecular coagulation testing.
